Westside Parks

With the beautiful weather in Arizona 9 months out of the year, it sure is nice to have so many wonderful parks in the West Valley.  If you're looking for parks to hike, hang out with family or participate in sporting activities there are plenty of locations to choose from.

Glendale has Sahuaro Ranch Park which is famous for the peacocks (locals call it Peacock Park).  It has historical buildings on the property as well as picnic areas, playgrounds and sporting fields. The Thunderbird Conservation Park is another fantastic place to visit. Activities there include jogging, mountain biking, horseback riding and even bird watching.  It is open from sunrise to sunset which accommodates busy schedules.  This park has some really great hiking trails which I have enjoyed numerous times.

The City of Peoria also has several exciting parks including the Rio Vista Community Park which has seven softball fields and a beautiful lake for fishing, volleyball sand courts and a skateboard park. The Rio Vista Recreation Center includes an indoor walking/jogging track and all the equipment you could possibly need.  They open at 6 am on weekdays for those of us who like to get up early and get our workout in before preparing for the rest of the day. The facility offers a tremendous amount of classes for all ages. The city has built 5 parks in the past couple years and plans to open another one in the fall of 2013 called Pioneer Park.

The City of Surprise has neighborhood parks, community parks and other recreational facilities that include swimming pools and most of them include softball fields, soccer fields, basketball courts, picnic ramadas and barbecue facilities.

And we can't forget about the Maricopa County White Tank Regional Park which includes a peak reaching over 4000 feet and 30,000 acres. The most recent addition to the park is a library and nature center. This is a great park for camping and will accommodate RV's and tents. The park has numerous waterfalls and about 50 hiking trails and once you make your way up the trails you will be able to see the beautiful views to the east and the City of Phoenix.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park is one of the most scenic water recreation areas in the "Valley of the Sun."  This northwest valley park is a recreationist's dream.  The park offers many activities, such as hiking, boating, swimming, camping, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

When it comes to outdoor activities the West Valley has no shortage. When you are suffering through the long, cold winters in places all across the country those of us living in the great State of Arizona will be enjoying all the wonderful outdoor activities.
